She was a good wife, though he knew that folk thought her simple. She would gaze in wonder at the daisies as if she had never seen a flower, and when blackbirds stole the cherries, she remarked on the mussel-shell sheen of their wings. At first, he was puzzled by her bright, empty chatter, but as the months passed, he would squint and nod his head, saying, "In truth, that parsnip does look like a squid." Fishing was perilous, weary work, and he found that her lightness bore him up. And despite her foolish words, she could gut a fish quicker than anyone in the village, the knife flashing in her hand like sunlight on the water. In the evening, while he mended the nets, she sang as she spun the coarse wool and wove--strange songs that rose and fell like a boat on the waves. After the baby came, she paid him as much mind as she was able, though when the wind was from the east, she would stop to listen while the oatcakes burned and his shell-pink hands reached out to her from the cradle.
