Writer Bio

My novels, short fiction, and poetry have appeared regularly for the past 30 years, both in the U.S. and abroad. My work has earned a number of awards, including three Bram Stoker Awards and an International Horror Guild Award. Cat in Glass and Other Tales of the Unnatural, my collection of short dark fantasy, was named an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. I live and work in Northern California where I lead a somewhat schizophrenic life, alternating between unkempt, introverted writer of weird tales and gracious (well, I try anyway) wife of Stanford University’s Provost.

Writing Style

Is it real, or is it just in your imagination? That's my favorite subject matter.

Writing Goal

I have a packed summer ahead, so this year my goal is to write a poem each week from May 28 to July 30, including the two weeks during which I'll be in Mongolia. Should be interesting.

Fundraising Goal

Clarion was a big boost to my writing career. Each year I look forward to paying that debt forward during the Write-a-Thon. I hope to raise at least $500.
