On The Web
I'm going to ask my fan-fiction readers for contributions, so I'm registering under my semi-secret fan-fiction pseudonym. I fell into pony writing by accident. It isn't like other fan-fiction; it isn't about pushing characters together and making them kiss (though there is some of that), or some central conflict or dramatic arc from the source material (because there isn't one). It's a set of archetypes to write stories with. The character designs automatically correct the beginning writer's common error of seeing her characters as more distinguished by their flaws than by their virtues.
I hope never to have a style. For me, the style is one of the key things that brings a story together. I imagine key scenes or lines of dialogue, and feel it, and choose a style that can recreate that feeling. Of course I don't always succeed. I can't add more poetry and pyrotechnics than I'm capable of, and some elements of style keep recurring. I write tersely, probably too tersely, seldom more than 4000 words per story. "Bleak and understated" comes easily to me.
