Writer Bio

Clarion Faculty Director since 2010, Professor of Ethnic Studies and Literature at UCSD. My new book Imagining the Future of Climate Change: World-Making through Science Fiction and Activism is forthcoming in Fall 2017 from the University of California Press in the American Studies Now! Critical Histories of the Present series.

Writing Style

My first book is on class, race, and empire in dime novels and best-selling 19th century sensational fiction. The second explores how radical social movements in the 1880s-1920s used visual culture to organize transnationally. I wrote an article recently on reading the work of the great cartoonist Jaime Hernandez as queer speculative fiction. I also occasionally make comics and write science fiction stories.

Writing Goal

Spend at least 10 hours a week completing the following: 1. Copy-editing for my forthcoming book Imagining the Future of Climate Change 2. Co-author article on Octavia E. Butler’s papers at the Huntington Library with Ayana Jamieson, founder of the Octavia E. Butler Legacy Network, who co-organized the Shaping Chance conference at UCSD with me last spring. 3. Make a 16-page comic and complete a 5000-word science fiction story. Do this by being what Octavia Butler called a Histofuturist: extrapolating from the historical and technological past and present. The two main characters in both are Lucy Parsons and Ricardo Flores Magón.
